There is a recurring theme in any improvement project being undertaken. You must first know the current state of the operation. Most people forget this, which results in making changes and not knowing if you actually improved anything. One of the ways to understand the process and sequence of steps the operator is taking is by using the Standard Work Sequence Sheet.

This form allows you to fill out the 3 sections:

  1. Man Time – This is the manual time of the operator
  2. Auto Time – This is the cycle time of the equipment
  3. Walk Time – This is how long it takes the operator to walk to the next operation or back to the beginning of the current operation.

To fill this out, you fill out the chart as follows:

  1. Write in the man time
  2. Write in the auto time
  3. Write in the walk time
  4. You will see how the walk time is in the middle of the “Man Time” and “Auto Time” sections. Draw a line from the “Walk Time” line straight out to the right for the length of time from the Man and Auto Times.
  5. Then, draw the squiggly line vertical for the number of seconds the operator was walking. It will sort of look like a stair case.
  6. The next operation will then pick up with the straight line continuing from the where the walking line left off. Draw this time straight out to the right again.
  7. Continue with these steps until you have the operators sequence of work steps completed.
