If you are setting up a line, then this is the equation you will need to ensure you are meeting takt:

# OP = Actual Time /Takt Time

Where:

  1. # OP means the number of operators (if a manual operation) or the number of operations/stations
  2. Actual time can also be called cycle time. It the amount of time it takes to complete one cycle. This is also done from the SOE (sequence of events)
  3. Takt time is the required amount of time needed to produce the number of widgets required by the customer. You can read more about Takt Time here.

For example, let’s say takt time is 6.25 minutes. This means the customer needs a widget every 6.25 minutes of your day to meet their requirement.

If you have an operation that takes an actual time (or cycle time) of 12 minutes, then you can not meet their time.

It them becomes a decision of if you need extra labor (ie people) or if you need another piece of equipment. Either scenario works.
